District awards are nice because, well, it is nice to know that your efforts are appreciated. But they are important because they recognize the extra effort that is necessary to deliver quality programs for the Scouts.
The 2020 North Shore District Awards Dinner was very different this year. For one thing, the traditionally January event was delayed until June due to COVID. But, it was well worth the wait for us because it validated all of our hard work. Here are some details on how Pack 170 was recognized:
At the District Roundtable, we used technology to electronically assign raffle tickets and to electronically select the winners for the first time. It was a good thing we did because we would probably still be drawing tickets if we hadn’t. How does technology make your life better every day?
North Shore District Pack of the Year
This award is primarily based on “Journey to Excellence” score but also considers other factors such as involvement with the District and Council, service to community, etc. This is the 4th straight year that Pack 170 has earned this honor, and with that comes the obligation to continue to deliver on the Scouting promise with the same passion and commitment that got us here.
Cub Scout of the Year
The “Scout of the Year” award is not presented every year. There is a high, minimum standard that must be met. 2020 demanded a lot from our units and from our Scouts, giving us not 1, but 3, deserving Scouts: “Venturer of the Year”, “Scouts BSA Scout of the Year”, and “Cub Scout of the Year”. For the first time in the history of the North Shore District, a Cub Scout met that high, minimum standard and that Scout was from Pack 170. We couldn’t be more proud.
Silver Squirrel (2)
Silver Squirrel is a special, district-level award given only by the North Shore District that recognizes Scout leaders, units and supporters for exceptional service to young people in the North Shore District. Two of our leaders were recognized for 2020, Mr. Nick and Ms. Kristi (Moved on to Scouts BSA). Congratulations to both!
Northern Star Award
The Northern Star is presented to outstanding volunteers by the North Shore District on behalf of its member units. We recognized Mister Dusty, our Wolf den leader and outdoor activities chair, for his dedication to making the Pack go in 2020. Watermelon applause… chomp, chomp, chomp, chomp… brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrt!
Journey to Excellence - Gold
Journey to Excellence is a scoring system from BSA National that helps units plan for a quality program by measuring their success against a key set of metrics each calendar year. Pack 170 not only achieved the highest level, Gold, but we had the highest score in the district!
#1 Popcorn Pack
Pack 170 sold $52,305 worth of popcorn for the 2020 season, and we did it in a safe manner. This was more than 5 times that of the next highest selling unit! Popcorn really helps our pack go!
Top 7 Highest Popcorn-Selling Scouts
Our top Scout sold more than $13,000 during the 2020 season and Pack 170 had the top 7 highest selling Scouts in the district. Way to go Scouts!
Excellence in Training Award
The North Shore District recognizes units for achieving at least 75% of unit leaders being trained for the position they are in. Pack 170 achieved 90%, the highest percentage in the district.
Congratulations to all of the recipients and congratulations to all of the families of Pack 170! It was your efforts that brought the North Shore District “Pack of the Year” paddle back home where it belongs!
